Boplaas Cape Vintage

A rich, full-bodied fortified red from Boplaas, the Nel family farm in Calitzdorp, run by the family since 1880. Calitzdorp is South Africa's home of fortified wine, and Boplaas is one of its most awarded producers, with numerous Platter's Wine Guide 5-star ratings.

Made in the traditional Portuguese way from Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca and Souzão, including old Tinta Barocca vines planted in 1968. The grapes are trodden in open stone fermenters (lagares), fortified with fine grape spirit, then aged for 12 months in Portuguese oak barrels.

Tasting notes

Very dark, purplish black. Blackberries, stewed cherry, violets, pepper and dark chocolate on the nose. Full-bodied, with big ripe tannins and flavours of cherry, plum, blackberry, spice and dark chocolate, and a long, luscious finish.

Food pairing

A classic with Stilton, and lovely with most cheeses. Also great with chocolate, dried fruits and nuts, crème brûlée or ice cream, or on its own to end a meal.
