Boplaas Cape Tawny
A smooth, nutty fortified wine from Boplaas, the Nel family farm in Calitzdorp, run by the family since 1880. Calitzdorp is South Africa's home of fortified wine, and Boplaas is one of its most celebrated names, with numerous Platter's Wine Guide 5-star ratings.
Made in the traditional Portuguese way from Tinta Barocca, Touriga Nacional and Souzão. The grapes are hand-picked, fermented and fortified in small open stone fermenters (lagares), then aged for at least eight years in 500-litre Portuguese oak barrels. This long, slow ageing gives the wine its tawny colour and rich, nutty character.
Tasting notes
Red-brown tawny with olive-green flecks on the rim. Walnut, roast almond, honey, caramel, spice, citrus and charred oak on the nose. Smooth and mouth-watering, with brandied fruit, roast nuts, honey, toffee, warm spice and hints of citrus that linger long after the first sip.
How to serve
Serve lightly chilled (11 to 14°C) in a white wine glass, as an after-dinner drink, or mixed with tonic over ice for a refreshing long drink.
Food pairing
Lovely with mature cheeses, pâtés, roast nuts and desserts. It also works surprisingly well with roast duck with a citrus glaze, steak, or Cantonese dishes.
