La Vierge Noir
An elegant, cool-climate Pinot Noir from La Vierge, on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge near Hermanus. Founded by Peter Clarke, the estate sits in a natural amphitheatre where dryland vineyards grow on virgin, clay-rich Bokkeveld shale soils, with cooling sea breezes that give slow, even ripening.
The name refers to the Black Madonna, or Black Virgin, a fitting name for this darker, more textured style of Pinot Noir.
Tasting notes
Cool-climate poise and elegance, with the earthy, savoury aromas typical of fine Pinot Noir, backed by bright red fruit. Delicate tannins and an elegant mineral core.
Food pairing
Mushroom risotto, roast game, cream-based pasta and hard cheese platters.
